Western Slope Beef Cow Symposium - KJCT8.com

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KJCT)-- Meat alternatives are getting more and more popular, it’s why local ranchers want to make sure they’re doing what they can to keep the beef industry alive.

That’s what they talked about Jan. 10, at the Western Slope Beef Cow Symposium.

A big topic was sustainability of meat and health of livestock.

While ranchers argue beef has much needed nutrition, supporters of meatless alternatives say beef is injected with harmful hormones.

"Every cow that you see standing in a field in the western slope of Colorado, every single cow contributes six to 800 dollars to our economy here," Co-owner Vanwinkle Ranch Janie Van Winkle.

A recent study shows that in 2018, meat alternative sales went up by 30 percent compared to the previous year.
