Gozu is closed temporarily after a New Year’s Eve kitchen blaze
Diners attending a New Year’s Eve dinner event at Ittoryu Gozu, a hip new wagyu beef tasting menu spot in SoMa, were forced to evacuate the restaurant when a small fire broke out in the kitchen, Hoodline reports. There were no injuries, and the SF fire department was able to contain and extinguish the fire shortly after arriving on the scene at around 7:30 p.m. In an email statement, chef-owner Marc Zimmerman and his partner Ben Jorgensen attributed the fire to “a structural issue,” and said they don’t expect the restaurant to be closed for longer than two months. Needless to say, Gozu is closed for now as the restaurant works to rebuild its central hearth, where most of the meat is cooked over fire — in the meantime, it may plan some pop-up events, a spokesperson for the restaurant said.
Gott’s Roadside’s Ferry Building location will close for a ‘refresh’ starting next week

Adriano Paganini sets his sights on the former Elite Cafe space
Last spring, Elite Cafe, the New Orleans-inspired Fillmore Street staple, closed after 38 years of business, citing untenable finances and a late-night crowd that never quite materialized. But, as SFist reports, the space will soon be given new life courtesy of Adriano Paganini and his Back of the House restaurant group, who plan to wave their magic wand — the same one behind such recent hits as Wildseed, Barvale, and, of course, the Super Duper burger chain — to open a yet-unnamed Italian restaurant.
A YouTube-taught baker aspires to run the ‘hottest bakery in Oakland’
Berkeleyside Nosh has a nice profile of the East Oakland bakery Sugarsweet Cookie + Cake Studio, whose proprietor, David Benton, didn’t realize until he was almost done with culinary school that baking and confections were his true calling. So, naturally, he took to YouTube to learn everything he wanted to know — eventually parlaying the skills he picked up into a bona fide cake, cupcake, and cookie bakeshop that he opened in Oakland this past fall.
