A local chef has been detained for allegedly stealing about 45 kilograms of beef, police said on Wednesday.
Police in Huangpu District said they started their investigation after a man surnamed Ding, who runs a meat shop on Zhejiang Road, reported that two boxes of beef went missing from his shop. From security cameras in his shop, he saw a man entering his business at 5am and making off with the meat, say police.
Ding claimed that the two boxes are worth about 4,000 yuan (US$570).
The suspect, a man surnamed Xu, was soon identified. Xu works as a chef at a restaurant in the same area. Street surveillance cameras caught him leaving the shop with the boxes of beef in his arms and then carrying them away on his bike.
He was apprehended on December 9 as he was working.
Xu has allegedly confessed to stealing the boxes of beef, which appeared to be fresh deliveries, while shop attendants were not looking.
Xu said he lost one of the boxes, but claims to have cooked and eaten the remaining purloined meat at his home, according to the police.
