LAWRENCE, Neb (KSNB) - Serving up locally sourced beef and educating children about where it comes from. It's the goal behind the Lawrence-Nelson Public School's Beef@School program.
Students at Lawrence-Nelson schools are served lunches twice a week using locally sourced beef.
Twice a week students throughout the district are served meals of locally produced beef products.
Committee member's come to the schools once a month and serve up burgers to the students.
Not only is it a time for kids to be greeted by other faces and enjoy a tasty meal, it's also used as a time to teach the students more about where the food their being served comes from.
Committee member Joel Livgren said, "sometimes it's surprising you get a different point of view from kids. They way they view things is different. They know more than what you think."
The program-which has been going on since 2017 is through the Nebraska Beef Council, but they do work off a fundraising and donation base.
They are currently in the midst of a fundraising campaign and taking bids on bags of seed corn. Below is more information on how to bid on their current seed corn fundraiser.
Kevin Ostdiek, 6 bags of Channel hybrid seed corn with VT2 Pro technology.
Pohlmeier Ag Chem, 6 bags of any Pioneer hybrid seed corn.
Nick Karmazin, Hoegemeyer The Right Seed, 6 bags of any hybrid seed corn.
Dusty Mihm, Top Shelf Seeds, 6 bags of any Fontanelle hybrid seed corn.
You can contact your preferred dealer to place a bid on the donated bags of hybrid seed corn by February 28th in order to support Lawrence-Nelson Beef@School.
