More than 15,000 pounds of beef items from Ohio-based AdvancePierre Foods, Inc. have been recalled as they may be contaminated with "extraneous materials."
The Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) warned yesterday that 15,739 pounds of ready-to-eat (RTE) patty products could include "small green soft plastic." Frozen batches of the items were sent to schools but not sold in retail outlets.
"Institutions that have purchased these products are urged not to serve them," the FSIS said. "[They] should be thrown away or returned to the place of purchase."
The frozen items were produced on September 11 and shipped to a single distribution location in Iowa, the FSIS said. The warehouse distributed the items to institutions, including some unnamed schools.
The agency said it's concerned some of the products may still be inside some customers' freezers.
"While the product was distributed to schools, it resulted from a commercial sale and was not part of the food provided by the USDA for the National School Lunch Program," the FSIS added.
The products in question are described in the notice as 15.09 lb. frozen, bulk-packed cases holding "fully-cooked flamebroiled patties." The code on the case label is 69097.
The recall was issued after AdvancePierre Foods, Inc. received a complaint from a customer who claimed to have found green soft plastic in a patty. So far, there have been no confirmed reports of "adverse reactions" due to consumption of the beef, the department confirmed.
"Anyone concerned about an injury or illness should contact a healthcare provider," the FSIS said, describing the December 20 report as a Class II Recall, indicating that it is ultimately low risk.
The agency said it "routinely conducts recall effectiveness checks to verify that recalling firms are notifying their customers of the recall and that actions are being taken to make certain that the product is no longer available to consumers." And it wasn't the first recall filed this week.
AdvancePierre Foods, Inc. is owned by an organization called Tyson Foods. In April, it published a voluntarily recall of 20,373 pounds of Tenderbroil Patties.
Also yesterday, roughly 1,000 pounds of pork sausage items produced on November 14 from a firm in Illinois called Ashland Sausage Co. were said to possibly contain a "hard, dark plastic."
Earlier this week, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) provided an update about an outbreak of E. coli-related illnesses potentially linked to romaine lettuce from Salinas, California.
A probe conducted with the help of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said there have been 138 cases reported in 25 states. The latest date of a patient becoming ill was December 1. As previously reported, the outbreak sparked more than 70 hospitalizations.
